Student Life

Encountering Christ

Catholicism is central to our mission. For this reason, every school day includes Mass. We teach theology out of the Bible, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and papal documents. Other important ways we live the faith include annual pilgrimages and retreats, modest and wholesome extracurricular activities, and sacred art and crucifixes adorn the hall and the classrooms.

Faith in Our School

  • Daily Mass

  • Weekly opportunities for Adoration

  • Retreats, Confession, and Spiritual Formation

  • Faith incorporated into every subject

  • Chaplains or regular visits from priests and religious

TRADITIONS & CV EVENTS

Chesterton Academy of The Holy Family has built a rich tradition of events and activities that foster community and faith, becoming beloved aspects of student life. From the Frassati Days Retreat to the All Saints Day Feast, Harvest Dance, and Christkindl Celebration, there are countless ways for students to engage in the school’s joyful culture.

Some of these traditions have been part of Chesterton Academy since its founding, while others are newer. Each year, students continue to embrace and elevate these experiences, deepening their formation in faith, virtue, and fellowship.

Frassati Days Retreat The Frassati Days Retreat kicks off the school year with a unique orientation experience where new and returning students come together to build community and set the tone for the year ahead. Guided by faculty and staff, and with the help of upperclassmen, students enjoy an engaging introduction to Chesterton Academy through outdoor activities, team-building exercises, and moments of reflection in nature. This retreat is designed to help students connect, grow in faith, and start the year with a sense of adventure and purpose. The faculty and staff help the students learn the joy of Chesterton.

40 Days for Life The 40 Days for Life campaign is a powerful opportunity for the Chesterton Academy community to stand together in prayerful witness for the dignity of all human life. Every Friday during the campaign, all families are invited to participate, beginning with the entire school joining together on the first Friday. In the following weeks, each House—Augustine, Ambrose, Chrysostom, and Athanasius—takes a turn leading, culminating with the entire school gathering for a final event and fellowship. This tradition is a beautiful expression of our school’s Cultura Vitae, bringing faith to life through prayer, solidarity, and the defense of life.

All Saints Day Feast The All Saints Day Feast is a cherished celebration honoring the lives of the saints (and the unnamed ones) with joy, community, and gratitude for their example of faith. House faculty and staff warmly invite every student to participate in this inspiring event, where the faculty and staff come together with the students to celebrate our shared Catholic heritage with prayer, fellowship, and festive activities.

Dances at Chesterton Academy are a vibrant expression of Cultura Vitae, celebrating friendship, joy, and community in a wholesome, uplifting atmosphere. Each dance—from the Harvest Dance to the Winter/Spring Swing, Junior and Senior Soiree—offers students a chance to connect, practice social grace, and build meaningful relationships within a culture rooted in respect and virtue. These events foster a sense of unity and joy that reflects the fullness of life, making them cherished traditions in our community.

Advent/Christmas CV Event The Advent and Christmas CV Night is a joyful celebration filled with festive activities, prayer, and fellowship, marking the Advent season with the anticipation of Christ’s coming. House faculty and staff eagerly invite every student to join them for one of the most exciting and meaningful events of the year, where traditions, games, and community spirit come together in celebration.

Christkindl Celebration The Christkindl Celebration at Chesterton Academy is a cherished Advent tradition that brings the school community together to anticipate the joy of Christ’s birth. This festive event features treats, crafts, and joyful activities that allow students to exchange small gifts, enjoy seasonal foods, and celebrate the spirit of giving. The Christkindl Celebration is a joyful reminder of the true meaning of Christmas, fostering a sense of warmth, generosity, and anticipation in the weeks leading up to the holiday.

These events foster community, faith, and fellowship, celebrating important seasons and themes throughout the school year.

House System

Chesterton Academy’s House system is drawn from the 1,000 year-old tradition of Christian education exemplified in the colleges at Oxford and Cambridge. The Houses provide real, tangible community within the larger school, giving students the opportunity to take ownership, fulfill the call to leadership, and to cultivate the ideal conditions for virtue. Each House has two Senior and two Junior prefects, two faculty advisors, and several parent liaisons.

Pilgrimages

Senior Pilgrimage to Italy

Our pilgrimage takes us to all the major churches in Rome, and on to Orvieto, and Assisi in just under two weeks. In Assisi, we visited the tombs of St. Francis, St. Clare and Blessed Carlo Acutis. In 2023, we will also enjoy a day-trip to Florence to see Michelangelo’s David, the Duomo, Baptistry and other incredible works of art. We will walk the paths of pilgrims, pray at the tombs of the martyrs, and enjoy being steeped in Italian culture. Accompanied by our tour director, Joe Long and his team at ProRome, this pilgrimage helps our students grow in faith and deepen their friendships—all while learning about the history of our Church and the Eternal City and beyond.
